Bottom Line
The Dell 1135n offers a lot for the price, including reasonably fast speed and high-quality text, but getting all of its features installed can be a challenge.
The Dell 1135n ($199 direct) monochrome laser multi-function printer (MFP) manages to be both well designed in most ways and surprisingly off the mark in a few. It offers most of what you probably want in a mono laser MFP, including high-quality text, reasonably fast speed, and a network connector. However, it fails to install some important features automatically, leaving it to you to struggle with getting them working. With a little more attention to detail, it could have been a standout winner. Even as it is, it's a reasonably good choice.
As the combination of the low price and network connector suggests, the 1135n is aimed primarily at both shared use in a micro or small office and personal use in any size office. That doesn't mean it is short on features though. In fact, it offers almost the same capabilities as the more expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-7840W ($300, ). Like the Brother printer, the 1135n can print and scan over a network and work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Its 40-page automatic document feeder (ADF) lets it scan, fax, and copy multipage documents easily, as well as handle legal-size pages—a critical feature for almost any office.

The 1135n scores well on paper handling for printing as well. The 250-sheet paper tray should be enough for most small offices or for personal use, and the 1-sheet manual feed makes it easy to print an envelope or print on special paper without having to swap out the paper in the tray. The one potential issue is the lack of a duplexer, even as an option, for printing on both sides of a page. However, you can duplex manually, of course, which should be sufficient if you don't need to duplex very often.
Setup
One of the nicer touches for the 1135n is that it's small enough to fit comfortably on a desktop. At 12.6 by 16.4 by 16.3 inches (HWD), it takes up less space than most inkjets, and at just 16.1 pounds, it's easy for one person to move into place.

Setting up the printer on a network is typical for a low-end mono laser MFP, for basic setup at least. Simply find a spot for the printer, remove the packing materials, load paper, connect the cables, and run the automated setup routine from disc. I installed the printer on a system running Windows Vista. According to Dell, it also comes with a full set of drivers and software for Vista 64 bit and both the 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. In addition, you can download a partial set of drivers and software for Linux and for Mac OS X versions 10.3 through 10.6.
Unfortunately, the automated setup doesn't install everything. For example, when I tried scanning from Photoshop using the printer's Twain driver, I got an error message. However, there was also an onscreen option that took me to a window where I could search for the MFP on the network and set the driver to use it. Once I did that, the scan feature worked without problems, so I don't consider this a major issue.
Much more troublesome were two similar problem I ran into that lacked obvious fixes—when I gave a command to send a file as a fax and when I gave a command to scan and e-mail. In both cases, I got cryptic error messages with no hint of how to solve the problem.
Dell confirmed that at this writing, the installation does in fact fail to set up the software properly for these functions. However, the company also recognizes that this is a problem, and says it expects an updated version of the installation disc, complete with a fix, to be shipping shortly. Should you get a printer with the original installation routine, you can set up the software manually. However, you may need to call Dell technical support to find out how.
Speed and Output Quality
The 1135n is fast for the price. It's built around an engine rated at 23 pages per minute, which happens to be the same rating as for the Brother MFC-7840W. It wasn't as fast as the Brother printer in our tests, but it doesn't cost as much either.

I timed the 1135n on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at a total of 8 minutes 46 seconds, not quite a minute slower than the MFC-7840W, at 7:51. As another point of reference, however, it was almost four minutes faster than the more expensive OKI MB280 ($299.99, ), at 12:32.
Text output is another strong point for the 1135n, with better than average quality for a monochrome laser. Most fonts in our text suite qualified as both highly readable and well formed at six points, several passed both thresholds at smaller sizes, and none, including highly stylized fonts with thick strokes, needed more than 10 points to pass both. For anything short of the most demanding desktop publishing application, you shouldn't have any complaints about the text.
Graphics and photo quality were typical for a mono laser. I saw some posterization and unusually obvious dithering in the form of visible patterns in both. However, the 1135n also did a much better job with thin lines than many printers, so that the graphic output overall is more than good enough for any internal use. Depending on your tastes, you may consider it good enough for PowerPoint handouts as well. Photo quality is good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages or add photos to client or company newsletters.
Dell's one-year warranty is also worth mention, with Dell shipping a replacement printer before you send the non-working printer back, and Dell picking up the cost of shipping in both directions.
One thing to keep in mind is that although the Dell printer is less expensive to buy than the MFC-7840W, it's more expensive to run, at a claimed 3.5 cents per page compared with 2.7 cents for the Brother printer. The difference may not sound like a lot, but if you print 12,500 pages over the lifetime of the printer—just 350 pages a month for three years—the savings in print costs will make up for the difference in initial price. Print more, and the Brother printer will be the less expensive choice in the long run.
Dell 1135n Driver Mac Os X
Of course, if you don't print many pages, the Dell 1135n remains the less expensive choice. I'll be a lot happier with it when once it starts shipping with an installation routine that actually sets up all of the features, but it's otherwise easy to recommend. If you want an inexpensive monochrome laser MFP to print, scan, copy, and fax, it will certainly do the job.
